Puzzles Dexterity Stone- Other 1880-1960

1893 - Ten Little Nigger Boys Puzzle

The bottom section of the box contains two concentric circles, the outer of which contains ten round counters, each marked with the name of one of the boys:
Sambo, Hank, Pete, Huck, Gabe, Pomp, Lige, Snow, Caesar, and Mose.
The inner circle has two slots which connect the circles, and the printed names of the boys within.

The rules on the inside the lid state
“Put the BOYS into the box promiscuously, and without lifting them off the bottom move them with the finger to their appointed positions in the outer circle; two boys will not pass in the inner circle.”stet

The Tinplate Decorating Company was Ltd from 1885 to 1912. The Puzzle Museum, the only place we can find a copy, dates it as 1893.

The well known rhyme about these characters was written in 1869 by Frank Green.

Condition – Ten Little Nigger Boys / The playing area (base of the tin) is good, names can be clearly read, odd tarnish marks on the metal – outside of base – some of the brass? has rubbed off / Playing pieces – good, names clearly readable, a couple a little grubby / Rules – inside lid- good / Lid – slight indentation on one side, a white patch (?where a label was stuck?), good picture – fits onto base well.

The Great European War Game
For this game the mercury represents the European Allies:- British Empire, France, Belgium, Italy, and Servia. The four colored discs represent Germany, Austria, Hungary and Turkey
The game starts with he “enemies” in Hunland and they have to be manoeuvred to their corners. Then the Allies must occupy Berlin.
The war is then ended by the Allies separating (the mercury being broken into small globules and return to their own countries).

Condition – Puzzle – slight abrasion to printed surface, manufacturer’s descriptive printed label to verso, of frame, 180 x 180 mm, possibly resealed

This item consitis of an explaination card – Five cards with black type and Five with red type – there are 5 couplets on each card.


The explaination card stated that you note the first letter on the black card that the “person takes” that will lead you to which red card to use CROWN are the initials of the first letters of the five red cards.) From that you can somehow deduct which pharse “the person” has chosen. Again by using CROWN in some way
