ANTIQUE CARD & TABLE GAMES

1893 - Ten Little Nigger Boys Puzzle

The bottom section of the box contains two concentric circles, the outer of which contains ten round counters, each marked with the name of one of the boys:
Sambo, Hank, Pete, Huck, Gabe, Pomp, Lige, Snow, Caesar, and Mose.
The inner circle has two slots which connect the circles, and the printed names of the boys within.

The rules on the inside the lid state
“Put the BOYS into the box promiscuously, and without lifting them off the bottom move them with the finger to their appointed positions in the outer circle; two boys will not pass in the inner circle.”stet

c1880 - Jack and the Emperor Dissecting Puzzle

Jack and the Emperor Dissecting Puzzle.

There are the names Butterworth Heath (? & c) and page 661 on the bottom right hand corner of the puzzle. As Butterworth and Heath seem to publish children’s books with other publishers during 1860 – 1880, it seem likely to have come from one of their publications.

With the matching box lid it seems unlikely to be a private issue but the puzzle is made more roughly than many puzzles of the period.
The box lid shows the puzzle which is small
