This is an unusual and very pretty Horse Racing Board made by Globe Games. As with all their games the artwork is very good and slightly different. The picture shows the board with the original playing pieces lying on the board on the right hand centre portion.
Gallopea - Condition / The board is very good - no damage, very clean and bright / Horses - very good one missing a head otherwise just light paint damge / Spinner good - this should fit onto a metal shaft the fits through a hole in the board - it can be balanced to work but ideally the shaft should be soldered onto its base (all there) but we don't like to repair things as some people prefer them unrepaired / No rules but a photocopy of a Globe Games Advertsing Phamplet which shows the game Postage / UK 1st Class £ 5.00 / European £ 7.50 / Worldwide £10.20 GO TO TOP.

This interesting and rare game was made just sfter Nellie Bly was travelling round the world trying to brake Phileas Foggs record as told by Jules Verne. It was possibly designed as a race between the two ladies who racing each other in different directions. Nellie Bly was already well known for her exposure of an asylum (10 Days in a Mad House). She was working for The World Newspaper who followed her progress. At the same time, The New York Newspaper, Cosmopolitan, sponsored its own reporter, Elizabeth Bisland, to beat the time of both Phileas Fogg and Bly. Bisland would travel the opposite way around the world. To sustain interest in the story, The World organized a Nellie Bly Guessing Match in which readers were asked to estimate Blys arrival time to the second, with the Grand Prize consisting at first of (only) a free trip to Europe and, later on, spending money for the trip
As a result of rough weather on her Pacific crossing, she arrived in San Francisco on the White Star liner Oceanic on January 21, two days behind schedule. However, World owner Pulitzer chartered a private train to bring her home, and she arrived back in New Jersey on January 25, 1890, at 3:51 p.m. Critically, while in England, Bisland was told (and apparently believed) she had missed her intended ride, the swift German steamer Ems leaving from Southampton, even though her publisher had bribed the shipping company to delay its departure. She was thus forced to catch the slow-going Bothnia on January 18, departing from Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland, ensuring that Bly would prevail.
Bisland's ship did not arrive in New York until January 30, so she completed her trip in 76 1/2 days, also ahead of Fogg's fictional record.. The Board Game follows the route taken by Nellie Bly as far as we can see. through England, France (where she met Jules Verne in Amiens), Brindisi, the Suez Canal, Colombo (Ceylon), the Straits Settlements of Penang and Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan
The strange thing is that the numbers start as 1 in London but the rules that play can start from anywhere Possibly not a good seller in the States so made more flexible to encourage interest from the UK
Race Around the World /Condition - Complete - Board Game with two dials - one removable that stores markers and rules - Book style board - cover is scuffed and has been repaired with tape on the back - playing area is a little grubby and scuffed at the edges and around the dials - original rules and period if not original markers

A Rare and interesting board game that is " A game of skill which possesses dramatic interest" The rules state that Trafalgar "should appeal to the popular and patriotic feelings of all grown-up English people, whilst it is fair to suppose that our sailor-loving youngsters will be equally captivated by the opportunity of contending in amateur Navel engagements"
The pieces are shown on a Halma Board, which is similar but not identical to the board shown on the rules, but could, and in one case we know was, adapted to play this game. A board that would be large enough for the playing pieces layed out as shown would be over 24 inches in length. We know of four copies of this game and none have an original board, which point to the board being a folded paper sheet that has been lost in the mist of time. The game consists of two opposing fleets both with Admiral's Flag ships, Rear Admiral 's Ships and 10 ships. There are also wreck-buoy to mark where ships have been sunk. There appear to have been two versions one in a maple box and this style in a card box. This game was copyrighted on 17/08/1894.
Trafalgar - Condition / Original Board missing - an Ayres Halma board can be provided / Playing pieces - complete (flag on flagship original) and good / Original Rules - Complete but one page is detached / Box good - some wear on the corners
